The chlorination upgrade project at this wastewater treatment plant was in response to a Type 1 environmental incident. The incident was caused by the failure of the existing chlorination system resulting in low residual in the effluent and reuse water for a period exceeding 2 hours.

The new chlorine gas system designed by Hydramet is a 3x3 duty/standby system with separated controls installed within the dosing station building in an adjacent room. The upgraded system design includes new safety features to comply with regulations and Australian Standards including updated signage, a gas leak detector, alarms and an emergency shutdown system.

Hydramet de-commissioned the existing system and ensured the chlorination of effluent was maintained at all times during construction. A temporary chlorination system was installed to satisfy this requirement. The upgraded chlorination system could then be installed and commissioned
